With more than 100 years of experience in animal feed production and specializing in muesli feed, minerals, concentrates and various special feeds, Solan relies on state-of-the-art process control technology in its production facility.
After more than two decades with the first ESA control system, the compound feed facility was reconstructed to state of the art with the latest technology. This was achieved during ongoing production as part of the second automation campaign.
Tradition meets innovation for healthy animals
When asked about historical milestones on the way to establishing a modern process control system, Harald Schmalwieser refers to several steps - from the construction of the first silo in 1956, to the first compound feed plant or line in the 1970s and the installation of a mineral feed line in 1981. From a few recipes that were produced, the demand increased over the years to a large number of recipes.
Due to the steady growth and the associated demand for process management and the analysis of raw material consumption and production quantities, Schmalwieser decided to invest in a new control system in 2001. In colaboration with an external consultant, a cooperation was formed with ESA, a company able to supply everything as a single source. ESA then precicely fullfilled these specific requirements of Solan with a great deal of expertise.

With increasing production quantities, the control system introduced in 2001 had to be modernized in recent years. Taking into consideration the difficulty of a comprehensive renewal of the automation of an existing system during ongoing operation, ESA was chosen once again.
Thanks to the combined expertise in planning, electrical installation and PLC commissioning, these demanding challenges and the simultaneous integration of a new production line were mastered smoothly.
